Ambassador Dog Dexter
Meet Dexter, our Ambassador Dog.
Dexter lives in Kingston and shares a house with Guide Dog pup Elly.
He has the best job in the world. He gets to meet people in the community who want to support us and know about what we do. While he doesn’t do the talking (we provide a human for that) he does make himself available for pats and cuddles.
Dexter entered the Puppy Development Program in 2010. He has a lovely nature and is very laid back. He made it into the formal stage of training and was taking to guiding very well; learning quickly and wanting to please. Unfortunately, he developed a rather ‘inconvenient’ health condition that was neither life threatening nor curable – he couldn’t hold on when he needed to go to the toilet. For a normal dog this isn’t a problem, but for a Guide Dog this would be a huge distraction for him when trying to focus on keeping his blind or vision impaired person safe while working.
Rather than withdraw Dexter, we decided to make use of his training and his personality. We created the perfect roll for him: Ambassador Dog.
As our Ambassador Dog, Dexter gets about 5,000 cuddles from supporters a year. He visits many organisations around the state that fundraise for Guide Dogs Tasmania. He’s quite famous and regularly gets noticed on the street by children and adults alike. Public relations is definitely his thing, and while he didn’t go on to become a working Guide Dog, he’s certainly living a fulfilling and important life.
