The next generation of Guide Dogs Tasmania’s puppies is ready to begin their training journey, but they can’t do it without the community’s help.
Guide Dogs Tasmania is urgently calling for Tasmanians to volunteer as Puppy Raisers, giving these remarkable pups the safe, loving homes they need to grow into calm, confident working dogs that will one day change lives.
“Thanks to the success of our program, more puppies than ever are about to start their journey towards becoming Guide and Assistance Dogs” said Guide Dogs Tasmania Dog Services Manager, Kim Ryan.
“But their journey starts with someone willing to open their heart and home, and we are in urgent need of some assistance to home these pups. We have always been lucky having enough volunteers to fill these roles within our Puppy Raising Program, however the program has grown to meet the need for working dogs in our community, and we now have a greater need for additional volunteers.”
Puppy Raisers care for a puppy from eight weeks of age for around 16 months, teaching basic obedience, supporting early socialisation and helping their pups build confidence in everyday environments like bustling shopping centres and neighbourhood parks.
The puppies then enter Formal Training at around 18 months of age, when Guide Dogs Tasmania rely on Bed and Breakfast Boarders, also a much needed and valued volunteer position. These volunteers care for dogs in training overnight and on weekends during their six-month program.
Volunteers play a vital part in shaping a dog’s development. The consistent, caring environment they provide is essential for preparing dogs for their future roles.
“These puppies have an incredible future ahead of them, helping Tasmanians live with greater freedom, independence and hope,” said Ms Ryan.
“This is one of the most meaningful ways a person or family can make a difference. You’re not just giving a dog a home, you’re helping transform someone’s life.”
As part of the Guide Dogs Tasmania volunteer community you benefit too – from social connection, health and fitness, and learning about dog training and behaviour.
